Wednesday, December 4th

Lisdowney v. Mooncoin

(The following report is courtesy of Lisdowney GAA website.)

Lisdowney Schools Football team faced Mooncoin under lights in Bennettsbridge on Wednesday, December 4th in the final of the Corn na Tuaithe (Country Cup).

Lisdowney got off to a good start with a point from Martin McEvoy and goals from Christian McInereney and Hugh Murphy. The first half saw some great passages of play from the half back line to culminate in two more points from Eoin Delaney who had a super match and Martin McEvoy again before Mooncoin threatened the Lisdowney goal, but Michael McInereny in goal was on the ball and all Mooncoin managed to score in the first half was a free.

Half time score Lisdowney 2-5 Mooncoin 0-1.

Mooncoin came back on form after the break and scored an early point but Lisdowney were quick to take control again with 2 more points from Martin McEvoy who was strong in the forwards throughout the whole match.

The Lisdowney backs came under some pressure 10 minutes into the half but some great defensive play from Jack Grace, Eddie Cahill and Evan McEvoy in the full back line kept the ball clear of the goal but Mooncoin’s centre forward, Lee Tracey, claimed a point. The play stayed in the area and Mooncoin were awarded a penalty which went wide. Lisdowney’s response was to move the ball in swift low moves up to Aidan Tallis who buried it in the net.

This was quickly followed by points from Aidan and Martin again with Eoin Kenny unfortunate not to score a goal when a great solo run was finished off with a crossbar shot and went over the bar.

Mooncoin fought hard and again threatened the Lisdowney goal, being awarded a free in front of goal, and this time their team captain made sure it hit home rattling the net through a packed goalmouth.

Lisdowney weren’t finished though and it was Aidan who finished Lisdowney’s onslaught with a great goal. Leaving the full time score 4-10 to 1-3 in favour of Lisdowney.

Alan Dunphy and Luke Holohan worked hard feeding the scorers throughout the match, with Dean Brophy, Oisin Quirke and Luke Campion winning a lot of ball in the middle of the field.

Lisdowney used two substitutes, Killian Dunne and Luke Holohan, both of whom put in a great effort when they came on.

Well done to the whole team and panel who have put in a huge effort at training all season.
